a failed experiment

“How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?”

— Paul

“A public faith is spiritual warfare in a secular world."

— Jon Tyson

THE GROWING CONVICTION

The longer I walk with Jesus, the more I notice a pattern.

God often moves in seasons.

Not just circumstantial ones, but internal ones. Deep work in the heart that unfolds slowly, intentionally. I’ll find myself circling a particular topic, burden, or conviction over and over, only to realize later that it was a theme He was developing all along.

Thread by thread, prayer by prayer, moment by moment.

This season that theme has been evangelism.

Not just the kind that hides behind niceness or hopes to earn a conversation in five years. But the kind that names the hope. That speaks the name of Jesus. That takes the risk.

For most of my life, I’ve leaned heavily on relational evangelism. And that’s good and right, it has its place. But if I’m being honest, I’ve often used that philosophy to delay obedience. To justify silence. To quiet the Spirit's nudge. To convince myself that "living a good example" is enough.

That’s a part of it, but Jesus didn’t say, “Go into all the world and be nice.”

He said, “Go and make disciples.”

And lately, I’ve been convicted that I’ve made peace with silence. That needs to change.

The world is too broken.

The hour is too urgent.

And the hope we carry is an antidote to a broken world.

THE ILLUSION WE BELIEVE

One of the enemy’s most effective strategies is subtle: Convince you that everyone else is doing great.

That your neighbors are content.

That your coworkers are fulfilled.

That your friends without Jesus are ‘happy enough’.

That you don’t want to offend them.

That bringing up faith would only stand to make it awkward.

It’s a lie.

A silencing from the enemy dressed as personal conviction.

Behind the highlight reels and curated aesthetics, we live in a generation that is anxious, medicated, overwhelmed, distracted, and deeply, deeply lonely.

We’re told that progress is rising, that technology is evolving, that society is growing more enlightened and tolerant and inclusive, and yet…

Depression is up.

Suicide is up.

Division is up.

Anxiety is up.

Loneliness is up.

Fatherlessness is rampant.

Family breakdown is everywhere.

Meaning feels like it’s evaporating.

Secularism has not delivered on its promises. It’s been a flashy marketing campaign with a hollow return. A sugar high with a soul crash. It’s overpromised and underdelivered.

And the lie that “everyone’s fine” keeps us from sharing the one reality that actually saves.

A CULTURE WITHOUT CHRIST

We are watching, in real time, what happens when a culture seeks to keep the fruit of the kingdom while ripping out its roots.

We want:

Human dignity.

Freedom.

Justice.

Compassion.

Community.

Purpose.

But we no longer want the source of those things:

The King.

The cross.

The Creator.

The Church.

Secularism is a failed experiment.

It sounds good on paper, but it doesn’t work in practice.

Because when you remove God from the center, you don’t just lose theology, you lose humanity.

We weren’t made to carry this much meaning on our own. We weren’t built to manufacture our own truth. We weren’t designed to chase self-actualization without a Savior.

When you kill God, you don’t get freedom, you get despair.

THE HOPE WE CARRY

Enter the Church. Enter you.

You are the bearer of good news.

You carry the only message that saves.

You hold the only truth that doesn’t shift with cultural tides.

You embody a kingdom that’s not built on likes or trends or applause.

As Peter reminds us: “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” [1 Peter 3:15]

And Paul echoes in Romans:

“How are they to hear without someone preaching?” [Romans 10:14]

It’s you.

Not the megachurch. Not the influencer. Not the famous evangelist.

It’s you, in your neighborhood.
You, in your office.
You, on the field trip.
You, at the gym.
You, in the 5-minute conversation that could change someone’s eternity.

The question is not whether people need hope.

It’s whether you’re willing to share the hope you already have.

A LIGHT BURDEN

We often stay silent because we fear doing it wrong. We picture evangelism as standing on a box yelling in the street. We think it has to be perfect. Polished. Scripted.

We imagine every conversation as high-stakes or confrontational.

But what if it’s just this:

Listening for the ache under someone’s story.

Naming Jesus when someone asks what’s kept you grounded.

Offering to pray for the coworker who feels like they’re drowning.

Asking better questions at dinner.

Being curious instead of combative.

Trusting the Spirit to do what only He can do.

You don’t carry the burden of results. You carry the presence of Jesus.

Let your evangelism be honest.

Let it be gentle.

Let it be bold.

Let it be natural.

Let it be prayerful.

Let it be daily.

And let it begin with a simple prayer as you encounter the spaces God sets before you.

“Lord, how have you been working in advance for me to step into this present moment?”

A FINAL CHARGE

If you believe this gospel is true,

If you believe Jesus really changes things,

If you believe eternity is real and the stakes are eternal,

Then let your life reflect that

Be bold. Be courageous. Be obedient.

The world is not doing as well as it pretends. You’re not “bothering” people by loving them enough to share Jesus. You’re offering them rest. You’re offering them redemption. You’re offering them a burden that’s light and a yoke that’s easy.

Don’t wait until they ask. Don’t wait until you feel “ready.” Don’t wait until it’s comfortable.

Say the name. Give the reason. Open your mouth. Plant the seed.

Your commission isn’t to save the world, it’s to share the hope.

Be a part of someone's eternal story this week.

Risk awkward for eternity.
